Water is more remarkable than we often realise

We turn on the tap and water flows. Simple, reliable, taken for granted.

But behind that lies a world of complexity, technology and care.

Producing clean, safe drinking water is never automatic. It requires foresight, commitment and clarity.

In the Netherlands, we are fortunate to trust our tap water. Elsewhere in the world, millions still live without that basic certainty.

This contrast motivates me.

It drives my work: helping build systems that are sustainable, resilient and socially grounded, today and into the future.

 

A lifelong fascination with water

My fascination began as a chemical engineering student.

Early on, I started involving students in my search for better solutions, and that has shaped my journey ever since.

I’ve now guided over 125 students. Many have gone on to work in the water sector.

Together we explore, test, reflect, and yes, sometimes fail. But always with curiosity, persistence and joy.

Some of the most lasting innovations begin small: by learning together, staying the course, and continuing when the work gets hard.

Technology can resist you. But when it responds, it gives something back.

 

Facing the future with coherence and courage

The drinking water sector is under growing pressure.

In the next generation, utilities will have to scale up massively while improving quality,

staying affordable and addressing climate, ecological and social demands.

“Sustainability” is often mentioned. But what really matters is coherence,

thinking clearly, acting courageously, and staying committed to long-term public value.

That begins with how we think, learn and lead.

 

 

What I do – and what I offer

My work is about connecting research, education and real-world practice.

I initiate innovation, guide learning, and build bridges between science, strategy and operations.

I develop technologies and methods, but I also mentor, challenge assumptions, and help people think in systems.

Too often, we act at the scale of what feels manageable, even when the problems we face are much larger.

I believe we need to think bigger, act braver, and build systems that match the challenges ahead.

That is the mindset I bring. And I’m looking for others who want to move with purpose.
